Mild catalytic oxidation of thioethers and thiophenes is an important reaction for the synthesis molecules with pharmaceutical interest, as well development efficient processes able to remove sulfur-containing pollutants from fuels wastewater. With respect green chemistry principles, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) ideal oxidant Me-containing porous materials (Me = Ti, V, Mo, W, Zr) are among best heterogeneous catalysts these applications. The main classes catalysts, including Me-microporous mesoporous silicates, Me-layered double hydroxides, Me-metal–organic frameworks, described in this review. active species generated presence H2O2, probable mechanisms, also addressed. reactivity sulfoxidation process role played by solvents explored.
